The James River volleyball team had a big Three Rivers District match against Glenvar on Tuesday as the paper went to press this week. River has opened the season 6-1.
The Knights opened their district season with a home match against Radford last week and lost in four sets, falling for the first time this season. The visiting Bobcats won the first set, 25-20, before the Knights regrouped and took the second, 25-14. Radford then took the next two to win the match by scores of 25-14 and 25-20. Ashby Wilkes had 27 digs for River and Ayden Jennings dished out 20 assists.
“Overall, we played well and competed, we just made too many errors, especially when the game got tight which put them ahead of us,” said coach Linsey Firebaugh. “Radford and other good teams do not make many errors. We just have to learn there is a balance in being aggressive while also limiting errors.”
On Monday the girls got back on the winning side with a three-set victory over Roanoke Catholic in Roanoke. River won 25-14, 25-9 and 25-12 as Wilkes recorded 17 kills.
“It was a good win for the girls,” said Firebaugh.
The Knights are back on the road Thursday for a game at Martinsville.
