The Botetourt Golf & Swim Club will be the site of the Blue Ridge District golf tournament next Tuesday, September 23. The winner gets a trophy but the tournament won’t have any bearing on post-season advancement. That won’t be the case until the Region 3D tournament in Abingdon on September 30.
At press time the Cavaliers were fighting to win the BRD regular season crown. The final round of the season was scheduled for Tuesday of this week at the Mariners’ Landing course and LB was five strokes ahead of second place Franklin County prior to the match, which was too late for press deadlines.
The Cavaliers have been coming on strong. Last week at Blue Hills they picked up 13 strokes on Franklin County as LB shot 307 and the Eagles shot 320. Botetourt’s Alisa Davidova shot four-under-par 67 for medalist honors.
After that round Franklin still held a two-stroke lead for the season, 1,091 to 1,093, but Monday at Ole Monterey the Cavaliers passed them for the first time in the mini-tour. In a nine-hole match the Cavs shot 155 to 162 for Franklin to take a five-stroke lead, 1,248 to 1,253. William Byrd shot 164 Monday and was 25 strokes behind LB at 1,273 while Northside and Staunton River were far behind.
Four golfers tied for medalist honors at Ole Monterey Monday with 37 on their cards, including Davidova, Garrett Honts and Cole Cecil from Lord Botetourt. Derek Bond had Botetourt’s fourth counting score when he came in at 44.
The Cavaliers also had a non-district nine-hole match at the Botetourt G&SC against Blacksburg. Honts shot 35 to lead LB while Davidova had a 38, Cecil shot 42 and Bond had a 44.
“We played really well at Blue Hills last week, played decent against Blacksburg at home, and then played solid at Ole Monterey,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “The kids are playing with confidence and gaining valuable experience every match. We were down 15 strokes after three rounds, so it’s nice to be back in front with one to go. Hopefully we can keep playing well at Mariners on Tuesday.”
