Virginia Tech junior Ashton Harper, a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, fired an opening-round, 7-under-par 63 en route to capturing the individual title at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on March 10 in Aiken, S.C. The two-day event was contested at the par 70 Palmetto Golf Club.
Harper’s 63 was highlighted by eight birdies. Ashton led the field with 20 birdies overall, out-pacing the next closest competitor with 15. He delivered an 8-under 202 (63-68-71) to edge Campbell University’s Benjamin Killingstad by one shot.
As a team, the Hokies placed fifth at 10-over 850 (281-285-284). Campbell claimed the team title at 10-under 830 (278-277-275), two shots clear of UAB.
The Hokies are back in action this weekend, March 20-22, at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga.
