The James River soccer teams will take on Martinsville tonight in a couple Three Rivers District matches. The boys will play at Martinsville and the girls will host the Bulldogs in Springwood, with a “Senior Night” varsity kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
The boys are looking to snap an eight-game winless streak, a stretch in which they’ve been shut out five times. However, one of those games was a 2-2 tie with Martinsville so the Knights are optimistic for a good result tonight. Last week they lost 6-0 to Nelson County and 3-0 to Auburn.
The girls were also shut out in their last two games, 7-0 at Nelson County and 1-0 at Northside Thursday night.
“Last week was very hard,” said River coach Bill Smith. “We had a close, hard-fought match with Region champ Glenvar on Monday, then travelled to undefeated Nelson on Tuesday and then played with our seniors out against 3A Northside on Thursday. The girls did very well against Glenvar and Northside, but faded with Nelson.”
The girls come into the week at 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the Three Rivers District. They were at Martinsville Tuesday prior to tonight’s home game with the Bulldogs and on Friday they’re at Patrick County.
