The James River girls had their best win in the two years of the tennis program when they upset top-seeded Appomattox in the first round of the Region 2C tournament last week. The Knights pulled out a 5-4 win at Virginia Tech.
“They were not only the top seed, they were undefeated,” said River coach Brian White. “It was a great day for our young program.”
The girls advanced to the second round where they lost to a strong Glenvar team, but again it was a battle to the end. The Highlanders pulled out a 5-4 win at Tech.
River also had girls in the singles and doubles tournaments. Leanna Steger lost in the first round to the number one from Appomattox and Leanna and Bella DiBenedetto lost to Glenvar’s doubles, 7-5, 6-0.
