The Botetourt Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation is offering two $500 scholarships that will be awarded to a graduating senior at Lord Botetourt High School and a graduating senior at James River High School.
Applications are due by January 15, 2017 and will be awarded at the Longbeards’ annual banquet in March.
One of the Longbeards’ scholarship winners also will be eligible for the Virginia Chapter scholarship worth up to $1,000. State chapter winners will qualify to compete for a national scholarship valued at up to $10,000.
Nationally, the NWTF makes more than $500,000 in scholarships available to high school seniors each year.
“The National Wild Turkey Federation knows that helping young people pursue their education and achieve their goals is an important step toward having leaders to conserve the nation’s land, water and wildlife resources in the future,” a news release about the scholarship says.
Applicants for the scholarship must be members of the NWTF and are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership abilities, community involvement and commitment to conservation and the preservation of the hunting heritage.
Applicants who are not currently NWTF members may join at the NWFT website at www.nwtf.org.
Scholarship applications will be available in the guidance offices at both high schools, by emailing Botetourtlongbeards@gmail.com and on the NWTF website at www.nwtf.org/resource-library/detail/jakes-scholarship-application.
