Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District and Valley Conservation Council will hold their monthly “Backyard Botetourt” workshop Monday, Oct. 23 at the Fincastle Library at 7 p.m.
October’s topic is a celebration of apples that will be presented by Barbara Leach from Virginia Cooperative Extension. Specifically, Leach will discuss how apple producers are using heirloom parentage to grow a modern apple that requires less care than some apples of the past.
As a result, these “new apples” are more suitable for organic growers and the reduced-pesticide culture.
Co-sponsored by Mountain Castles SWCD and Valley Conservation Council, the Backyard Botetourt series is intended to increase public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of local natural resources and conservation topics. Fall meetings will be held Sept-Nov on the fourth Monday of the month at the Fincastle Library.
