Cub Pack 82 goes camping as part of October theme

Cub Scout Pack 82 went camping overnight at Troutville Park to celebrate October’s theme, “A-Camping We Will Go,” and the October Scout Law point of being “Thrifty.”

While there, the Scouts did a service project, doing park clean up through the Clean Valley Council’s Fall Waterways Cleanup Project. The Scouts picked up two large bags of trash and litter, then had a short discussion of why it was important to keep parks and nearby creeks clean.

Ferrum College student Kyle Haley led the discussion; his major is in environmental science, and he was able to engage the kids in an age appropriate example of why local clean-ups benefit everyone.

Every year volunteer teams from all over the Roanoke Valley join forces to remove trash from streams, creeks and rivers and their vicinities. Since 2001, Clean Valley Council’s Fall Waterway volunteers have collected over 275 tons of litter and countless tires from waterways. Commonly found items include bottles, cans, cigarette butts, bait cans, and plastic bags.

Cub Scout Pack 82 will complete October’s “A-Camping We Will Go” with a campfire and pack meeting, and review the October Scout Law point of being “Thrifty.”

November’s theme for Cub Scouts is “Cubs Give Thanks” and the November Scout Law point is practicing “Reverence.” Pack 82 has several activities and events planned to explore these.

Cub Scoutings is for boys in first through fifth grades, or 7 to 10 years old. For information about joining Botetourt County BSA, call 966-4243.
