James River High School students got an upclose look at what a vehicle accident can mean during last Thursday afternoon’s mock accident in the school parking lot. The school’s Youth of Virginia Speak Out Club (YOVASO) and Drama Clubs worked with the Buchanan Fire Department, Eagle Rock Fire and Rescue, Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, Botetourt County Fire and EMS, Lifeguard and Virginia State Police to conduct a simulated car crash and emergency medical response. The drama unfolded as students filed to the back of the parking lot where the simulated accident involved two vehicles filled with James River students on Prom Night. Fire and EMS personnel had to cut the vehicles to extract the victims, and as each was taken from the cars the fatalities were carried and laid in front of the assembled students. Afterward, the YOVASO members pleaded with their schoolmates to be responsible behind the wheel on prom night, which was Saturday night. Those involved in the mock wreck pose for a picture.
