POWELL, Wayne E.
Gunnery Sgt. Wayne Edward Powell Sr., USMC, Ret., 84. of Roanoke, passed away peacefully in his home Wednesday, July 25, 2018.
Wayne was born in Fincastle October 27, 1933 and was the son of the late William E. and Florence G. Hall Powell. He lived in Fincastle until his military career took him to the West Coast.
Wayne retired as a Gunnery Sergeant with The United States Marine Corps after 23 years of service. Subsequently, he served the Marine Corps as a civil servant for seven years. Wayne enjoyed singing in the choir of the various churches in which he was a member. He was an avid supporter of the Second Amendment and the NRA; was a history buff of the Civil War, enjoyed country and gospel music, and was an equestrian trainer.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife Vicky Grimm; sons, Wayne Powell Jr., William Powell, Gary Powell and Curtis Powell, all of Oceanside, Calif.; step-children, Tony Grimm and Christie Grimm, both of Vinton; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; former wife and mother of his children, Phyllis Powell of Oceanside, Calif.
A graveside service with full military honors provided by The United States Marine Corps will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 3 at Wheatland Lutheran Cemetery, 1560 Wheatland Road, Buchanan. Wayne’s family will receive friends at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville Thursday, 6-8 p.m.

ADCOCK, Matthew W.
Matthew Wayne Adcock, 50, of Clifton Forge, formerly of Eagle Rock, died Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at The Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center in Low Moor.
Friends gathered on Sunday, July 29, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. Masonic Rites were conducted at 3 p.m. by members of Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge No. 166 A.F.&A.M. with Glenn Jones officiating. Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, handled arrangements.
ELMORE, Michael S.
Michael Scott “Micky” Elmore, 52, of Rocky Mount went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving wife, sweet daughters, precious grandson, supportive son-in-law, and his devoted pastor.
He was born in Union, W.Va. on May 18, 1966 to Donald K. Elmore of Sinks Grove, W.Va. and Phyllis Lucas Elmore of Union. He married Sherry Wikle Elmore on August 12, 1989 in Union.
He graduated from Potomac State University with an Associate’s degree in Agriculture. He also graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. He was an active participant judging livestock for Botetourt FFA and 4-H. He was the West Virginia FFA State President from 1986 to 1987. Micky was also a member of the Hokie Club. Micky also served as a Deacon at Woodlawn Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Theodore and Edna Elmore and Grover and Goldie Lucas; and sister, Amy Darlene Elmore. Michael is survived by his wife, Sherry Elmore; daughters, Emily Treadway (Garth) and Mattie Elmore; grandson, Kyle Treadway; father, Donald Elmore; mother, Phyllis Elmore; sister, Amanda Carter (Jerry); two nephews, Brock McClung and Jacob Carter; and one niece, Gracie Carter.
Funeral services were conducted at Woodlawn Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 28, with Pastor Eddie Hawks officiating. Interment was in Franklin Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
HOSTETTER, Shelby J.
Shelby Jean Fridley Hostetter, 76, of Eagle Rock died Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the Friendship Health Care Center in Roanoke.
She was born July 27, 1942 in Clifton Forge to the late George “Buck” Fridley and Ruby Parker Fridley. She was a laborer for H&O Canfield as well as Acadia. She was a member of Longdale Baptist Church in Eagle Rock.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hostetter; a son, Timothy James Hostetter; a brother, George Fridley Jr.; and an uncle, Lewis Parker.
She is survived by her three daughters, Charlotte Vanhoozier of Troutville, Vickie Sandidge of Fincastle, Theresa Beavers of Roanoke; a son, Freddie Hostetter, Jr. of Eagle Rock; a sister, Betty Saville (Louis) of Eagle Rock; two brothers, Charles Fridley (Barbara) of Eagle Rock and Roy Fridley of Delaware; five grandchildren, Kelly Hostetter (Jeremy), Justin Asbury (Lillian), Heather Dunn (Joseph), Daphne Childress, Freddie Hostetter III; six great grandchildren, Skyler Hostetter, Laikyn Hodges, Damian Childress, Kayla Childress, Joseph Dunn, Jr., and Isabella Hostetter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 31, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with the Rev. Grover Stevens officiating. Interment was in Central Advent Christian Church Cemetery, Clifton Forge. The family visited with friends on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggest memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Eagle Rock Fire and Rescue, P.O Box 234, Eagle Rock, 24085.
LEE, FRANKLIN E.
Franklin (Frank) Everett Lee, 84, of Botetourt County, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Lewis Gale Hospital.
A Celebration of Frank’s Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1, at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, at the funeral home.
SPENCE, Ruby M.
Ruby Ann Spence Moran, 80, of Troutville, died Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at her home following a series of illnesses.
Ruby Ann was born in Floyd February 26, 1938 and lived in Botetourt most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Basil E. and Mary E. Dooley Spence.
Ruby Ann was a homemaker and enjoyed canning, caring for her children and grandchildren, playing word search puzzles, playing Yahtzee and rummy. She was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Ruby Ann was preceded in death by her grandsons, Bobby Moran and DJ Moran. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Wesley L. Moran; sons and daughter-in-law, Wesley L. “Jake” Jr. and Doris Moran of Fincastle, Petie Moran of New Castle, Donnie Moran of Troutville; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and James Crawford of Fincastle; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Garland “Butch” and Juanita Spence of Hardy, Larry Spence of the Roanoke Valley; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Roger Goad of Troutville.
