Lord Botetourt swept the volleyball season series with county rival James River last week as the Cavaliers won in three sets in Springwood.
Botetourt dominated the match, 25-12, 25-14 and 25-12 and LB is now 17-1 with a big weekend ahead at the “Tournament of Champions” at Patrick Henry High School.
Last week in Springwood, Miette Veldman showed why she’s one of the top players in the state with 15 kills against River, adding 10 digs and four aces. Catherine Reinard had seven kills, Kenleigh Gunter had six digs and Jordyn Kepler had 29 assists, seven digs and five aces. Bailey Marshall had 10 kills for River and Anna Schroeder had six digs.
Botetourt had three wins last week as the Cavaliers continued their quest to repeat as Class 3 state champions. The Cavs began with a three-set win at William Fleming last Tuesday, Oct. 2, by a score of 25-8, 25-6 and 25-11. Veldman had 11 kills in that one and Brooklyn Shelton and Ryanna Clark had six each. Reinard served up 10 aces against Fleming.
The River match was Wednesday, and the Cavs returned home Thursday for their third win in as many days, this time beating Staunton River 25-7, 25-10 and 25-8. Veldman had 21 kills and six aces and Kepler had 32 assists.
River bounced back with a three set win over Parry McCluer last Thursday at home, winning 25-22, 25-21 and 25-14. The Knights had 37 kills to just 15 for the Blues and served up 11 aces. Marshall had 20 kills for the Knights.
On Monday, River dropped to 8-11 on the season and 1-6 in the Three Rivers District with a three-set loss at Floyd County, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-17. Bailey Marshall had 12 kills and Morgan Marshall had eight.
The Knights were scheduled to host Glenvar on Tuesday of this week in another tough Three Rivers match, followed by a home match with Giles on Thursday and a trip to Alleghany next Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Meanwhile, Lord Botetourt will have a busy schedule with six matches in three days, beginning with a Blue Ridge District match on Thursday at Northside. LB will play in the Tournament of Champions at PH this weekend with two games Friday and three on Saturday. The Cavs will meet Liberty Christian Academy at 5:45 p.m. Friday, followed by a match with Rockbridge at 7 p.m. On Saturday the Cavaliers have PH at 9:45 a.m., Marion at 11 a.m. and Musselman High at 2 p.m., all at Patrick Henry High School. The Rockbridge, PH and Musselman matches are in the main gym and the LCA and Marion matches will be played in the auxiliary gym.
LB has two more district matches next week, at William Byrd Tuesday and home to William Fleming on Thursday, Oct. 18.
