The Lord Botetourt Cavaliers are coming off their bye week with a trip to Bluefield, W.Va., to play the legendary Bluefield High Beavers. Bluefield is the number one ranked 2A team in the state of Virginia and the defending state champions.

“They’re undefeated and they haven’t lost since 2016,” said LB coach Jamie Harless. “They’re big, fast and athletic. They have a corner who’s a five star prospect, and that usually means they’ll be headed to the NFL some day.”

Bluefield went 14-0 last year and has started the 2018 season with six straight wins. One of their wins was against Graham, the school on the other side of the Virginia-West Virginia border, by a score of 38-14. Other wins over Virginia schools include a 60-18 win over Tazewell and a 44-10 win over a Richlands team that has beaten William Byrd this year, giving the Terriers their only loss to date.

Harless and his staff were able to scout the Beavers last weekend during the bye week. They watched Bluefield’s 41-7 win over PikeView.

“They have a wing-T philosophy and they want to get the ball outside, but they can also run it right at you,” said Harless. “They run a four-four defense with a ‘bear’ front.”

Botetourt comes in at 4-2 and ranked second in the VHSL Region 3D standings. The Cavaliers’ two losses have come to Northside and Blacksburg, the top ranked teams in 3D and 4D who are both undefeated.

“We play a very strong schedule,” said Harless. “I feel like it’s the product of our success.”
