Elwood “E.D.” Schechterly is stepping aside as girls basketball coach at James River.
Schechterly coached the team for four seasons and had an 8-63 record in a very tough Three Rivers District. He had trouble getting girls to go out for the team and struggled with depth on the Knights’ squad.
A James River High graduate and school Hall of Famer, E.D. was a VHSL All-Star while playing high school basketball for legendary coach John Shotwell. He went on to play at Lynchburg College (now the University of Lynchburg), where he made All-Conference four years, was named Player of the Year for three years and was First Team All-American. Schechterly still holds several records at Lynchburg.
After college, Schechterly played two years of professional basketball in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was the leading scorer and rebounder in the league for both years.
Schechterly has been a coach at James River for 26 years and will continue as the junior varsity softball coach this spring.
