This Thursday, the Fincastle Town Council holds its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in the Old District Courthouse.
At the meeting, the council plans to discuss further information about the upcoming Fincastle Festival taking place next weekend.
Council will also discuss the fundraising event at the historic Santillane. The event will focus on information about the Virginia Lewis & Clark Legacy Trail (VLCLT), its historic sites and those in need of signage, as well as examples of potential signs used on the site. Betsy Merritt, Deputy General Counsel, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, will be the event’s guest speaker.
Examples of signage stories could include: recognizing a Corps of Discovery member with newly researched and proven Virginia ties who returned to Pulaski County post-Expedition; identifying an extant structure that was documented as a tavern and visited by William Clark in Rockbridge County in 1809; and closer to home in collaboration with Botetourt County, the Town of Fincastle, the Botetourt County Historical Society and Museum, and Historic Fincastle Inc., erecting two interpretive signs, one at the Courthouse and one at the Museum in Fincastle in the future.
Town Manager David Tickner will provide an update on Big Spring Park. Council recently submitted a grant application to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) under the preservation trust fund.
The council will provide an update on Fincastle’s sustainability, greener policies, buying local and reducing the community carbon footprint. A “Community Stability Committee” has not yet been appointed by Town Council, but is currently in the developmental process.
In July, the council adopted a new Town Comprehensive Plan working with undergrad students in Urban and Regional Planning at Virginia Tech. For more information about the plan adopted this summer, visit townoffincastle.org/comprehensive-plan-2021.
