This odd-looking artifact in the Botetourt County Historical Museum was used by farmers to weigh their crops. Today they are still used in a more modern form for exercise. It is a “Kettle Ball” made by Milo-Duplex, weighs 36 pounds, has a wooden handle and is cast iron. When farmers used this ball they became stronger and began to show off their strength at festivals and competitions. Today Milo-Duplex makes exercise equipment like this with a handle and they are called “Kettle Bells”. They are used to improve strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. From the 1800’s to the 2000’s these are still good for one’s physique.
