John David Barger, 96, of Roanoke, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 13, 2022.
He was predeceased by Louise Barger, his wife of 63 years; as well as son-in-law, Danny Shelton of Brown Summit, N.C.; parents, William and Esther Barger; and siblings, Ethel Campbell, Helen Noel, Ralph Hite, Huiet Barger, Maude Wilhelm, Alice Firebaugh, Annie Wray, and Charlotte Wolfe.
Surviving are his son, David Barger (Martha), and his daughter, Sheila Barger Shelton; as well as grandchildren, Kyle Barger and Kendall Barger. Also surviving are special family friends, Elizabeth and Josh Campbell, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was an active member of Hollins Road Baptist Church since 1949. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, softball player, and participant in the Live Nativity.
He retired after 25 years at General Electric in Salem, working in the sheet metal department, and concluding as a welder. Prior to that he was an employee at Johnson Carper Furniture Company.
After his retirement John began running numerous 5K races including all the Virginia Western annual races. During that same time, he collected and distributed food from the Southwest Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank. He was a lifelong bowler, fisherman, and hunter.
The family received friends from 5 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, at Oakey’s North Chapel. Services were conducted by Pastor Mark Washington at 12 noon on Monday, February 21, at Oakey’s North Chapel.
Special appreciation is expressed to the staff at The Oaks at Richfield as well as Richfield Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Hollins Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 3502 Old Mountain Road, NE, Roanoke, 24019.
