Botetourt County 4-H Livestock Club Prepares for the State 4-H/FFA Skillathon
By Ephraim B. Kellerman, Activity Coordinator, Botetourt County 4-H Livestock Club
The Skillathon is a test about knowledge of livestock, created for 4-H and FFA. It is an amazing experience for members of 4-H and FFA. The Skillathon is a judging competition and an opportunity to test your knowledge about judging, or you can do it so that if you ever go into a fair you will know what the judge is looking for, which would be a big advantage.
Here are just a couple of things they will do: a written test with questions about the total livestock industry, identification of livestock equipment and use, identification of feeds and use, and much more! The top twenty (top ten juniors, top ten seniors) placing individuals and the top ten teams (top five juniors, top five seniors) get rewards based upon total score.
Everyone will also get a participation award. The top team is invited to participate in the national skillathon hosted in Louisville, KY in November. The Skilllathon happens at The Virginia Beef Expo on March 29.
