DJ Toliver of Lord Botetourt won the shot put at the Colonel Classic, and also finished first in the discus.

The Lord Botetourt and James River track teams are scheduled to compete in the “Terrier Challenge” meet at William Byrd High School in Vinton this Saturday. Both teams competed in “Colonel Classic” on a cold day at William Fleming High last Saturday.

“It was cold at the Fleming meet,” said LB coach Chris Caldwell. “When the sleet came I gave the kids the option of going home if they wanted. Most had parents come pick them up.”

Among the highlights for the Cavaliers was a first place sweep of the shot and discus by Dmetri Toliver. He won the discus at 115’ and the shot at 43’7”.

In the girls discus, Elizabeth Hodges was sixth in both the shot and discus. Elijah Rose was fifth in the high jump.

James River athletes braved the cold to the end. For the boys, Ben Bailey was second in the high jump and third in the triple, and he also ran on the fourth place 4×100 relay team with Brian Moran, Chase Cuddy and Conner Church.

Jacob Hill was fifth in the 800, Cayden Shorter was sixth in the 1,600 and Michael Jergensen was fourth in the 3,200. In the throwing events, Canaan Clarke was second in the discus and third in the shot, while Alex Eastman was second in the shot and third in the discus.

For the girls, Emma Francis won the discus and placed third in the shot, while Naveah VanBuren was fourth in the discus. Holly Hylton was sixth in the 400 and ran on the fourth place 4×100 relay team with Kelsey Firebaugh, Ella Wright and VanBuren.

LB also competed in a meet at Staunton River last week. Toliver and Kendal Howard went one-two in the shot put and Rose won the high jump.

Maddie Malue took a second in the girls 100 while KJ Bratton was second in the boys 100 and ran on the second place 4×100 relay team with Zion Woody, Dylan Knick and Joey Isaacs.
