The James River volleyball team will try to bounce back from a tough week when the Knights host two Three Rivers District teams this week. Carroll County was scheduled to play in Springwood Tuesday and Radford comes to town on Thursday night.
River played two tough opponents last week and dropped two matches on the road to district foes. Last Tuesday they fell to Floyd in a marathon match. The host Buffaloes won the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-16, before River rallied to win the next two and tied the match, 25-14 and 25-20. Floyd then won the fifth and deciding set to 15 by a 15-4 score.
“The varsity fought hard,” said River coach Davina Copsey. “The team played some of the best volleyball they have played all season. Floyd had a server who had a pretty good run in the final set and we couldn’t catch up after that.”
Jadyn Miller and Emma Francis had 10 kills each to lead River and Bella Gilliland had six. Ava Thacker led with 16 digs and setters Konner Myers and Belle Stewart combined for 30 assists. Mary Hoye and Kaylyn Bryant had 12 digs each.
Last Thursday the Knights played host to defending Class 2 state champion Glenvar and the Highlanders remained undefeated with a three set win, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-15. That dropped the Knights to 3-6 on the season.
Next week River is at Alleghany on Tuesday, then the Knights will have a rematch with Floyd in Springwood on Thursday, October 13.
