The James River golfers finished a solid third in the Class 2 state golf tournament at the Olde Mill Course in Carroll County Monday, and Lord Botetourt was getting ready to play in the Class 3 tournament as the paper went to press.
The Three Rivers District had two of the top three teams in the state, as Floyd County cruised to the team championship with a team score of 313. Marion was next, 25 strokes behind, with a 338 and James River was third with a 352. River had shot a 350 on the same course a week prior to qualify for the state.
River’s Ryan Steger and Dylan Hicks led the way for the Knights with an 86 each. Haden Park shot 88 and Sam Bell rounded out the scoring with a 92.
“The boys pushed through a few problems and stayed the course,” said coach Donna Cox.
The Lord Botetourt golfers were scheduled to tee off on Tuesday in the Class 3 state tournament at the Stonehenge Golf & Country Club in Richmond. Look for results in next week’s Fincastle Herald sports section.
