James River boys open soccer season with win, girls game with Nelson County is postponed

The James River boys fought back from a 3-0 deficit to win their season opening soccer game against Eastern Montgomery on Monday. The Knights took a 5-4 win in Springwood.

“We dug us a big hole early in the game but once we settled in we were working well throughout the field,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “I was impressed with the ‘never give up’ attitude of the entire team.”

River tied the game with just seconds left in regulation, then dominated the overtime period for the win.

“We made mistakes early and almost beat ourselves, but corrected them and played well for the rest of the game,” said Whiting. “We scored from all different positions, forwards, midfielders, set pieces, and corners, which shows me we are capable and dangerous from all directions. I love the balance these guys are showing.”

James River got goals from five different players as Mathew Alderson, Maddox Potter, Justin Hill, Josiah Clark and Zachary Vernon all found the net.

The Knights were scheduled to play at Riverheads on Tuesday, then travel to Rockbridge on Friday before taking off for spring break.

The River girls were scheduled to open at Nelson County last week but it was postponed due to a scheduled school trip and will be made up on April 11. This week the girls were at Riverheads Tuesday for a doubleheader with the boys and Friday Rockbridge is here.

Next Tuesday, March 28, the girls will host Nelson County.
