Preservation Botetourt, Inc. recently sponsored Jessica Gantzert, Archaeological Lab Director, and her team in presenting a slideshow and the latest information concerning the archaeological dig in the area of the original manor home at the Botetourt Center at Greenfield Industrial Park. The cultural resources staff of Hurt & Proffitt, Inc. initiated the archaeological excavation in May of 2016. Excavation was overseen by Hurt & Proffitt, Inc. staff archaeologists and undertaken with the help of numerous volunteer professional archaeologist from Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, Monticello, Washington and Lee University, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and the University of Tennessee. Significant additional help was provided by volunteers from the then Friends of Greenfield and the Botetourt Town & Country Women’s Club.
All artifacts recovered were processed and curated to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources standards in the Hurt & Proffitt Archaeological Material Laboratory at Historic Sandusky. A total of approximately 9,000 artifacts were recovered with more than 100 artifacts determined to be significant for display and public interpretation. Some of those artifacts are now on display at the Botetourt Center at Greenfield. These artifacts will help interpret life as it was in the 18th & 19th century in Botetourt.
