The Lord Botetourt and James River cross country teams competed in the Alleghany Invitational last Saturday. The Wilson Memorial girls and Christiansburg boys were team champs among over 20 teams competing at the Jackson River Sports Complex in Covington.

The Lord Botetourt girls were 13th and the boys were 14th. James River’s boys were 17th and the girls did not have a full team.

“The team ran really well,” said LB coach Elizabeth Wilson. “Our runners looked strong and worked well together. We had many personal records. Over half of our team ran their fastest times. The course was flat and fast, and our team ran the course perfectly. We raced smart.”

Rye Jackson was LB’s top boy runner with a time of 17:37 and also scoring were Joel Butler, Jacob Malue, Blake Peery and Garrett Sutton. For the girls, Addison Purser was the Cavaliers’ top runner with a time of 22:35 and other scorers were Amelia Dietrich, Madeleine Gantzhorn, Alexa Carillo and Elizabeth Meadows.

River got a season’s best performance from every runner who participated. Scoring for the boys team were Aiden Bartulis, with a team best time of  19:48, followed by Tristian Capo-Lopez at 19:52, Braden Jones at 20:23, Silas Miller at 20:36 and Silas Whitson at 20:37. The girls team was led by Drew Whitson at 22:15. Also running were Georgia Miller, Victoria Race-Waller and Riley Persinger.

“We have a very young team and Coach Divers, Coach Davidson and I are extremely proud of the hard work and progress of both teams,” said River coach Butch Lewis.

River will be back on the trails on October 4 with the East Mont Invitational at Camp Alta Mons. The Cavaliers are now off until October 7 when they run in the Blue Ridge Invitational at Greenfield.
