The historic Wilson Warehouse in Buchanan, built in 1839, welcomes area residents to an open house and tour on Monday, May 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.
The open house follows the 77th Annual Memorial Day Remembrance Service held at Buchanan’s Fairview Cemetery at 11 a.m. and luncheon at Solomon’s Mission at noon.
The Wilson Warehouse is owned by the Buchanan Town Improvement Society. Many know the building as the “Community House.” During the open house, the society will show a presentation at 1:30 and 2:30, “Historical Discoveries at the Wilson Warehouse.” Recent work at the warehouse uncovered over 30 “ledgers” and other documents dating from 1812 to 1931. The majority of the ledgers pertain to early Buchanan history and the Wilson Company that operated a shipping, receiving and retail operation out of the Wilson Warehouse.
Renovation of the building and grounds is just one of the projects underway to upgrade the 185-year-old structure. Other projects include exterior painting and lighting, HVAC updates, restoration of the second and third floors and preservation of historical documents.
For many decades, the Wilson Warehouse was a place for weddings, receptions, service club meetings and community events. It features a large, open event space and commercial kitchen. The space is available for rental.
