The General Federation of Women’s Clubs held its 2024 Annual Convention in Chicago, Ill., June 29-July 1. More than 1,000 participants turned out for the convention whose theme was “Sparkle, Shine, Succeed.” Along with several expert guest speakers, there were educational workshops and networking events. Many awards and recognitions were given to individual ladies, clubs, regions, and states for their volunteer work, fundraising, and in-kind donations throughout the 2022-2024 GFWC administration.
At the convention, the GFWC Botetourt Town and Country Women’s Club was recognized nationally for its Community Impact Project and awarded $2,500 to be used to continue the members’ community efforts. The club was also recognized most recently at the GFWC Virginia Summer Conference in Blacksburg for this national award.
The members of the Botetourt club worked alongside the Botetourt Historical Society, the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Department, neighbors, the Fincastle mayor and council, Historic Fincastle, Daughters of the American Revolution, Countywide League, Preservation Botetourt, and the Virginia State Garden Club to prepare an 1871 house for the relocation of the Botetourt County Historical Museum. Club members cleaned and painted every room of the house, supplied recycled packing materials for moving over 6,000 artifacts, and prepared food for workers and events held at the museum. The club also donated a microwave, refrigerator, cabinets, furnishings, and American and Virginia flags. Club members Ann Layman and Beth Pappas led this two-year project.
