The Town of Fincastle held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Big Spring Park nature trail last Saturday. Mayor Mary Bess Smith and Town Manager Melanie McFadyen gave remarks and thanked the community and the individuals who worked on the trail since the project began in 2023.
In 2021, the town was awarded two grants (one from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, and one from the Virginia Department of Conservation) and put them toward the completion of the Big Spring Park nature trail.
Last spring, the town constructed an outdoor classroom, and installed a white board for use by the students at Breckinridge Elementary. Along the way, the town benefited from several Eagle Scout projects – constructing signs, fences, and gates for the park.
Following the ceremony, the delayed July 4th fireworks celebration commenced at Breckinridge Elementary School.
