With the Virginia High School League basketball season officially in the books the league will soon announce its All-State teams in each of the six divisions. Botetourt County schools have been well-represented on the all-district and all-region teams, which have been announced in the past month.

The Lord Botetourt girls have received the most honors among the local teams. The 2020 state co-champs have the Player of the Year in both the Blue Ridge District and Region 3D in senior Miette Veldman, who was also named to the first team in both. Also, LB coach Renee Favaro was named Coach of the Year in both the BRD and Region 3D.

In addition to Veldman, senior Taylor Robertson was named first team in both the district and region. Senior Meredith Wells was named second team in the BRD and Region 3D and Brian Myers, a junior, was Honorable Mention All-Region.

For the LB boys, three underclassmen received post-season honors. Junior Kyle Arnholt was first team All-Blue Ridge District and second team All-Region 3D while fellow junior Tanner Selkirk was first team all-district and Honorable Mention All-Region. Conner Tilley, a sophomore, was second team all-district and second team all-region.

“All underclassmen,” said coach Andrew Hart. “I’m really proud of them.”

James River had two All-Three Rivers District selections among the boys’ team, and both are underclassmen. Freshman Ryan Steger was first team all-district and sophomore Patrick Clevenger was second team in the very tough Three Rivers.

The James River girls did not have any all-district selections in what might have been the best Class 2 girls’ district in the state.

“There were 26 kids on the selection list and one girls averaged 21 pints and 14 rebounds and didn’t make the second team,” said River coach ED Schechterly. “My girls didn’t have a chance, but I had a really good bunch of girls. They played hard and never game up.”
