The Virginia High School League announced the 2026 Class 2 all-state soccer teams for both girls and boys.
For the girls, Nelson County senior center attacking midfielder Clara Moldenhauer is the Class 2 Player of the Year, and Nelson County head coach Bryan Ferren is the Class 2 Coach of the Year.
Moldenhauer, an attacking midfielder who will play in a forward position as a winger for Division II Western Colorado University in the fall, scored 23 goals and 25 assists this season for the Class 2 state champions. She was also named Dogwood District and Region 2C Player of the Year.
In eight years covering seven seasons (second year was canceled due to COVID), Ferren established Nelson County as a district and regional power. This season, he led Nelson County to a 23-0 record and its first-ever girls soccer championship, playing defending champion Glenvar to a 0-0 draw before winning 3-2 on PKs.
James River was not represented on the all-state team but River had three girls named to the All-Region 2C second team. Avery Saunders was named at forward, Sophie Martin at midfield and Chloe Helmandollar on defense.
In boys’ soccer Glenvar senior defender Tyler Curfiss is the Class 2 Player of the Year and Glenvar head coach Josh Jones is the Class 2 Coach of the Year.
A first-team all-state selection in 2025, Curfiss earned 14 defensive shutouts this past season, anchoring the back line for the Highlanders. He also earned First Team All-District, First Team All-Region, and First Team All-State in both 2026 and 2025.
In six seasons leading the Highlander program, Jones’ team has won six consecutive Three-Rivers District Championships, six consecutive Region C Championships, and four consecutive state championships, equaling Meridian (2013-16) for most consecutive boys’ titles in VHSL history. His last three teams finished the season unbeaten, going 22-0-1 this season, 23-0-0 in 2025, and 22-0-0 in 2024. Jones owns a 120-3-3 record over six years and has Glenvar on an 84-game unbeaten streak. His overall VHSL career coaching record is now 389-75-32.
