It took three days, but the Class 3 state track meet was finally completed Sunday in the rain. The Broadway boys and Phoebus girls won team state championships while the Lord Botetourt girls were 20th and the boys were 21st.

“We got very wet,” said LB coach Christopher Caldwell. “On Friday, after only a few events were completed, the meet was cancelled due to severe weather. Saturday, after completing a few events, the meet was cancelled due to rain, lightning and flooding.  It was announced at that time the meet would start on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with hopes to complete it in one day.

“On Sunday, the meet resumed and ran without any breaks.  It rained most of the day but not enough to stop the meet. The only event not completed was the pole vault.”

LB’s Sofia Hernandez finished seventh in the state to place in the 1600. She ran a time of 5:27.75.

The LB girls also scored in two relays, with a fifth in the 4×400 with a time of 4:21.57 and a seventh in the 4×800 at 10:33.50. The 4×400 team included Kaitlyn Mosdell, Hernandez, Lauren Duff and Brooklyn Hornback. The 4×800 was comprised of Modell, Brielle Jackson, Hornback and Claire Seibel.

Individually, Duff was 12th in the 400 and 14th in the 200. Seibel was 16th in the 800.

For the boys, Nick Francis placed fourth in the discus with a heave of 134’ 9”. Connor Hayes also took home a state medal with a sixth place finish in the 1600, posting a time of 4:29.68.

Other Cavaliers competing, with finishes, included Jeremiah Mayo with ninth in the 300 Hurdles and 11th in the 110 hurdles, Bryan Cook with 11th in the 800 and Jake Mcnutt with 17th in the discus.

“Regardless of the weather our students did fantastic,” said Caldwell.
