As students return to the classroom for the 2024-2025 school year, safety remains a top priority for schools across the county. This year marks a significant step forward in ensuring a safe and secure learning environment, as all 11 local schools now have a dedicated School Resource Officer (SRO). Troutville Elementary and Central Academy Middle School have welcomed two new officers, further enhancing Sheriff Matt Ward’s commitment to student safety. Deputy Mitch Bryson will join the staff at Troutville Elementary School after completing D.A.R.E. school and Deputy Ricardo Haston will be joining the staff at Central Academy Middle School. Deputy Trishanna Harris joined the staff at Breckinridge Elementary School last school year with the assistance of a grant which fully funded her position.
With the addition of these new officers, the SRO program has expanded its reach, ensuring that every school has a dedicated law enforcement presence. SROs serve not only as protectors of children but also as mentors and educators, working closely with students, teachers, and administrators to maintain a safe and positive school environment. Officers engage with students on a variety of important public safety topics through the Office of the Attorney General’s Virginia Rules program. Some of the public safety topics discussed with the students include those focused on Bullying, Technology and You, Student Responsibilities, Drugs and substance abuse education, and many others.
The Sheriff’s Office applied for and was awarded again this school year a grant that will continue to pay for the SRO position at Breckinridge Elementary School. “The safety of our children has been and will continue to be a top priority for the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Ward. “We are thankful for the Board of Supervisors’ continued support in prioritizing school safety.”
With the addition of officers at Breckinridge Elementary, Troutville Elementary and Central Academy Middle School, the Sheriff’s Office and county is not only reinforcing its commitment to the security of the children, but also ensuring that students have the support and guidance they need for a successful school year.
