The steering committee for the fundraiser for Alan Wright and his family include (from left): front, Chuck Fridley, Bim Gardiner, Greg Jakubowski and Dale Jones; back row, Kim Cash, Barbara Kolb and Mary Jakubowski.

A benefit for Assistant Chief 5 Alan Wright of the Eagle Rock Volunteer Fire Department will be held Saturday, April 2 at Blue Ridge Vineyard, Eagle Rock.

Wright suffered a near fatal accident while attempting to help rescue a family during last summer’s flooding in Alleghany County.

Parrot Heads of the Blue Ridge is sponsoring the afternoon event that will run from 1-5 p.m. Admission is $10. All proceeds from the gate will go to the Alan Wright family.

Music will be by Steel Rain band, and Roller’s Smokehouse will have food for sale. There will be corn hole, other games and a 50-50 raffle.

Wine and beer will be for sale, and a commemorative wine glass will be $5 with a complimentary wine tasting.

As a member of the ERVFD Swift Water Rescue Team, Wright volunteered for the assignment to try to rescue the Alleghany County family. He and other team members Chris Keyser and Travis Smith were trying to navigate the flooded stream when they were hit by a submerged object and pulled under by the rushing waters on June 23, 2016.

Wright went into cardiac arrest, was resuscitated, stabilized and transferred to a Roanoke hospital.

Currently, Wright is in rehabilitation at home with his wife and two teenage children.

For more information, call Greg at 540-334-5710.
