This long-handled “No. 29” waffle and cookie iron was used over an open fireplace around 1820. The handle is 27” but would still get hot. The griddle measures 5.5” and has a beautiful deep geometric design. Mrs. John Morton (Eliza) Price (1797-1855) of Eagle Rock used this artifact. It was donated by her descendants and is displayed in the Botetourt Museum of History and Culture in Fincastle with other early cooking utensils. A modern, similar version called a “Chuck Wagon Waffle Iron” with a wooden handle can be purchased today from Orvis.
