Handkerchiefs were once considered a status symbol. Not too long ago, women took pride in their intricate embroidery. This one is part of the “Home Grown: Botetourt’s Agricultural History” exhibit. It has blue swallows flying above pink and white flowers on white cotton. A farm woman’s work was never done, but she relaxed by doing needlework. Embroidered handkerchiefs were always carefully hand washed. It is displayed in a glass case at the Botetourt Museum of History & Culture in Fincastle and was donated in 2023 by Valerie Brugh.
Etiquette is constantly changing. What was once considered proper behavior may become laughably outdated or even inappropriate over time. However, with a new generation of nostalgic young people the customs of the past are being revived and sought after again. Throughout history handkerchiefs have held a special sentimental meaning. There are books written on the subject of ladies’ handkerchiefs.
