The two Botetourt County teams both opened with dominating wins on Monday in the first day of the Virginia High School League volleyball season, setting up an intra-county battle on Thursday. Both Lord Botetourt and James River opened with three games to none wins.
James River will host the match with Lord Botetourt on Thursday, with a jayvee game at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity to follow. Lord Botetourt will be the host when the two meet in Daleville on September 10.
Botetourt opened with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-11 win over Jefferson Forest in Forest on Monday. Miette Veldman got off to a great start with 17 kills and 20 digs while Taylor Robertson had 13 kills and 10 digs. Ryanna Clark had seven kills and three blocks, Kenleigh Gunter had 17 digs and Jordyn Kepler dished out 43 assists.
After Thursday’s match at River the Cavs will have two games next week, on Tuesday at Cave Spring and on Thursday at Blacksburg.
River opened with a 25-8, 25-15 and 25-19 win over Parry McCluer in Buena Vista Tuesday. Ainsley Simmons had six aces while Morgan Marshall had eight kills and Grace Lawson had five.
The Knights will play in a volleyball event at the Virginia Volleyball Center in Sterling, Va. on Saturday. River will play against Thomas Edison High School from Alexandria and Osbourn Park from Manassas, two much larger schools.
Next week the Knights will go to Covington on Tuesday.
