Members of the Botetourt County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held their annual Honors, Recognitions, and Celebrations meeting on Saturday morning, June 19, in the Family Life Center at Fincastle United Methodist Church. Family members joined the DAR ladies to celebrate milestones in the life of this chapter.
New members were inducted in a ceremony led by Regent JoElla John and Chaplain Emily Talbot-Guillote. The new members have proven that they are descended from Patriots from the American Revolution. They are Alicia White-Braxton, Dana Long, Lisa John, Beverley John, and Judy Morris.
The DAR chapter presented Good Citizen Awards to students from both county high schools this year. Hudson Parker, the recipient from Lord Botetourt High School, will be attending the University of Virginia, majoring in Business and Political Science. Riley Potter, the recipient from James River High School, will be attending the University of Virginia, majoring in Math and Computer Science. The DAR Good Citizens program encourages and rewards good citizenship in an outstanding high school senior each year. The qualities these high school seniors have demonstrated are Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Patriotism. Each recipient received a certificate and pin from DAR and a check sponsored by The Bank of Fincastle.
The DAR Community Service Award was presented to Weldon Martin. A retired educator, he served as the executive director of the Botetourt County Historical Society for 16 years and continues as its treasurer. He is the treasurer of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association and is active in the Botetourt Retired Educators. He is secretary of the Botetourt Kiwanis Club and a member of the Catawba Masonic Lodge. Weldon is also the treasurer and a choir member at Fincastle United Methodist Church. For his distinguished service to his community, he was presented a certificate and a pin from the chapter.
