Botetourt DAR members and guests at the February 19 meeting at The Glebe

Members of the Botetourt County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held an Honors, Awards and Celebration meeting on Saturday morning, February 19, in the Botetourt Room at The Glebe. Family members and guests joined the DAR members to celebrate milestones in the life of this chapter.

A new member was inducted in a ceremony led by Regent JoElla John and Chaplain Emily Talbot-Guillote. This new member, Patricia Cottom Morris, has proven that she is descended from Samuel Cochran, a Patriot from the American Revolution.

The guest speaker for the morning was Sam Winkler, a living history actor who portrayed Jacque Jouett, a captain in the 16th Regiment of the Virginia militia during the Revolutionary War. In June 1781, aware that British General Cornwallis had ordered Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton to ride to Charlottesville and capture Governor Thomas Jefferson and members of the Virginia legislature, Captain Jouett rode 40 miles overnight to warn the governor and legislators of the coming threat.

Regent John and District VII Director Pat Honts presented the prestigious DAR Honorary Regents Pin to Carole Beat Geiger, the first Regent in the Botetourt chapter to receive this honor. Honorary Regent Geiger thanked members for this distinction and recounted how former Regent Sidney Yonce Hunter had encouraged and assisted her during her terms as regent.

After the meeting was adjourned, the members and their guests moved to the Allegheny Dining Room in The Glebe for a luncheon.
