The Lord Botetourt girls have a chance to put themselves in the catbird’s seat in Blue Ridge District basketball with games against William Fleming and Northside.

The Cavs came into the week with a 16-2 record and an undefeated mark in the BRD after seven games. They were scheduled to host William Fleming on Tuesday, and the Colonels were 5-1 in the district at that point with their only loss to the Cavaliers. Results were too late for publication, but if the Cavs won they all but wrapped up the district regular season title. A Tuesday loss and both teams would have one defeat with a week of games to go.

Botetourt kept rolling last week with two more wins. The girls hosted Staunton River on January 23 and took a 69-33 win over the Eagles. Madilyn Winterton led the way with 16 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and eight steals while Taylor Orange added 11 points and Gracie Huffard added 10.  LB had 21 assists on 27 made field goals.

“I thought we shared the ball well, but we are getting a little too complacent on the defensive end,” said coach Renee Favaro. “It will be on me to make sure we are working on that moving forward.”

On Friday the girls had another dominating win as they beat William Byrd, 63-21.  Grayson Alfano scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the way while Caron recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Winterton added 11 points and six assists, Orange scored nine points and Ainsley Anderson had nine assists and six steals.

“Overall, a good week for us,” said Favaro. “We still need to be more efficient offensively and I would like us over 40 percent from the field as a team and we were just below that. A lot of that comes off not getting enough easy looks from our defense creating live ball turnovers.  We will work to improve those things over the next two weeks of the regular season.”

The Cavaliers will host Northside Friday, then wrap up the regular season next week with a trip to Franklin County on Tuesday and a home game with Jefferson Forest on Wednesday, February 7.
