The Lord Botetourt girls had a good stretch on the hardwood last week, winning all three of their games to improve to 15-3 on the season.
The girls opened the week with a 69-28 win over Alleghany. Brooklyn Shelton had a great shooting night. She played just 16 minutes and scored 36 points, hitting 14 of 17 shots from the field. Miette Veldman had 11 points and nine rebounds and everyone on the team got ample playing time.
On Friday at home the girls hammered Staunton River, 66-24. Botetourt raced to a 49-15 lead by the half and had a chance to rest the starters with a big game against Parry McCluer coming up a day later. Veldman and Jenna Alam had 16 points each in 12 minutes to lead LB. Brooke Snyder came off the bench to score eight points with seven boards and Makenzie Collins had seven rebounds.
On Saturday in Buena Vista the Cavaliers took on a Parry McCluer team that was 13-1 prior to the game. LB took charge early, scoring 15 of the first 19 points, and went on to a 56-50 win over the Blues.
“We had a great start to the game,” said LB coach Chuck Pound. “We maintained that through the half but Parry McCluer had a strong third quarter as we struggled some offensively, but our defense really let us down that quarter.”
The Blues hit a three to end the third with LB leading 40-37. Botetourt then opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run. Veldman hit a three, followed by two three-pointers by Shelton and a two-pointer by Scottie Cook. The Cavaliers made their foul shots down the stretch.
“This was a great match-up for both teams to get us ready for the post-season,” said Pound. “The crowd was great. Parry McCluer filled almost one whole side of the gym.”
Veldman had an outstanding game with 20 points and a school record 24 rebounds. Shelton added 12 points, Alam had 11 points and seven assists and Cook played well with eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Cavs are back home Friday for “Senior Night.” Collins is the only senior.
