The Lord Botetourt soccer teams had a good week as both the girls and boys went 2-0 and allowed just one goal total over four games. Both teams beat William Byrd and Staunton River.
The girls opened the week with a 3-0 shutout of Byrd in Daleville. Mikel Johnson, Briana Myers and Hannah Carter scored for the Cavaliers. The two teams are scheduled to meet again tonight in Vinton.
On Friday the Cavs had no trouble with Staunton River as Myers scored three times for her first “hat trick” of the season. Ally Spangler had two goals and Alexis Bonhotel, Emma Rice and Kaleigh Horan had one each as LB improved to 3-0 with the win in Moneta.
The boys are also 3-0. They played Byrd in Vinton and took a 3-1 win, then followed up with a 3-0 shutout of Staunton River in Daleville. Point scorers for the week included Dylan Salvi with one goal, Chase Peery with two goals, Arin Sparks with two goals, and Zach Ruhlman with one goal and three assists. Junior goalkeeper Jake Koffman earned his first shutout of the season and the back-up keeper managed to save a penalty kick late in the game against Staunton River to keep them scoreless.
“This past week is evidence that they guys have embraced our attacking style of play in the formation we run,” said coach Tim Wright. “To see how topics stressed in practice translate into the game is truly rewarding.”
The boys host Northside on Friday and the girls go to Northside. Both teams were scheduled to play Franklin County on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication.
