A joint public hearing of the Buchanan Town Council and Buchanan Planning Commission will take place on August 14 at 7 p.m. at the Buchanan Council Meeting Room regarding a Special Use Permit for the placement of the mural on the rear façade of the Buchanan Library.

The mural project is a part of the Botetourt County Library Incentive Fund providing an opportunity for community contributions toward library capital projects that benefit the general public. Buchanan Library’s mural and garden project totals $6,000 with a county match of $3,000. The incentive fund projects were approved by the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors at the June 21 meeting.

The Friends of the Buchanan Library posted a photo of the mural progress last week on their Facebook page. “This mural will add a great pop of color to the parking lot and serve as a sign of positive changes coming,” the post stated.

Citizen responses in the post’s comment section have been positive with citizens thanking the Friends of the Buchanan Library and also mural artist Cheyenne Marcus for her work to this point.

Last Friday, a gray tarp appeared over the mural in response to a citizen complaint about the project not going through the proper measures before approval. The town soon sent out an advertisement about the August 14 public hearing.
