Pork by the James Seriously Smokin’ Barbeque Competition gets started at 5 p.m. Saturday when gates open on the Buchanan Town Park.

The event was rescheduled from this past weekend because of Hurricane Florence.

The competition is accompanied by a concert sponsored by Bank of Botetourt featuring Melissa & the Growlers Blues, Funk & Soul band performing from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on the park stage and follows the Buchanan Tri— Run,  Ride, River Race.

Pork by the James is expecting nine amateur barbeque chefs and teams putting their grilling skills to the test during the annual cooking competition.

Gates open to the public at 5 p.m. Admission is $5 which includes one BBQ sample ticket— or donate a 16 ounce or larger jar of peanut butter, or four cans of either chicken noodle soup or tomato soup. The food items collected will be donated the Buchanan Elementary School Back Pack Buddy Program.

Food will be available for purchase including BBQ samples at $1 per two-ounce sample, full meals featuring BBQ, baked beans, slaw and potato salad for $7, Build a Meal for $5, Carnival Fries for $3 and Hershey Ice Cream cones for $1 and $2. A Beer Garden featuring brew from PA Short will be open from 5-8:30 p.m. offering beer and wine at $5 per serving.

An awards ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. with the announcement of the Judges’ Award and the People’s Choice Award.

The Buchanan Tri— Run, Ride and River Race will finish on the Buchanan Town Park just prior to the competition.

While enjoying an evening of pork barbeque, town officials encourage visitors to bring a lawn chair to enjoy the live concert featuring Melissa & The Growlers.

Reviews say “From city street concerts and summertime festivals to club shows and wedding receptions, the band has a reputation for performing great shows.” With decades of collective experience, Melissa & The Growlers’ lineup of professional musicians ensures a stellar performance. The band plays everything from classic blues to booty-shakin’ funk to sweet and sassy soul.

Pork by the James raises money for the annual Buchanan Calendar of Events.

Sponsors for Pork By the James includes Bank of Botetourt, Twin River Outfitters and The Bank of Fincastle.
