The Lord Botetourt girls will be looking to pick up a non-district softball win today when the Cavaliers play a 5 p.m. game in Blacksburg. The Cavs beat the Bruins in Daleville last Thursday, 12-4.

Callie Kidd had a big day in the win over Blacksburg with four of LB’s 15 hits. Gracie Sargent, Gracelynn Clark, Callie Shuler and Olivia Pierce each collected multiple hits.

“We showed a lot of patience at the plate, grabbing 10 walks in the game,” said LB coach Megan Cook.

Phoenix Humphries earned the win in the circle, with Pierce pitching four innings in relief. Humphries surrendered only one earned run, striking out four and walking none.

The win was sandwiched around losses to Staunton River and William Byrd. On Cinco de Mayo the girls dropped a 10-3 decision to Staunton River in Daleville despite out-hitting the Eagles, 12-9.

“Although we out hit Staunton River we weren’t able to advance the runners or string hits together at the right time,” said Cook.

Pierce struck out 10 and allowed just three earned runs but the defense struggled. Pierce also led the offense with four hits in four at bats. Bailey Hutchins and Humphries each collected multiple hits.

On Friday in Vinton the girls dropped a 5-1 decision to William Byrd, a team they beat by 10 runs in a previous meeting in Daleville. Abby Perkey had a solo home run for LB’s only run. Byrd’s Addison Clark hit a three run homer in the first inning off Pierce and pitched a strong game for the host Terriers.

“It was a tough pill to swallow as we previously collected 15 hits against Byrd at home,” said Cook.

The Cavaliers come into the week at 7-10 with a 3-4 Blue Ridge District record. They were rained out of a Monday game with Cave Spring and will host Northside on Friday.
