The Lord Botetourt football team started their bye a little early last week. The Cavaliers’ home game with Rocktown was moved up from Friday to Thursday due to impending bad weather, then the Cavaliers officially started their break when the game was called at halftime.

Botetourt took a 72-0 win over Rocktown, a first year school that was formed when the Harrisonburg district split into two high schools. It was obvious from the start that the Raptors were no match for LB, as the Cavaliers took a 34-0 lead in the first quarter.

“I think most of the seniors decided to finish at Harrisonburg,” said LB coach Jamie Harless.

It was 72-0 by halftime and a miserable night, so both coaches agreed to end the game at the half. It was Homecoming at LB and Harless had his team on the field for the crowning ceremony as many wet fans filed for the exits.

“I made the boys come out and watch it,” said Harless. “I never thought I’d have the whole team out there at halftime for Homecoming.”

Tristan Overbay and Quinten Jones ran for two touchdowns each in the first quarter. A fifth score came when Aiden Thomas recovered a fumble and took it 42 yards to the house.

Angel Rigney opened the scoring in the second quarter with a three-yard run and Harless started clearing the bench with nine minutes still to go until halftime. After a safety scored by Gavin Walker, the Cavs got a seven-yard TD run by Thomas, a 25-yard “pick six” interception by Jones and Oscar Ramos Cedillo scored the last two TDs on runs of five and 16 yards.

Overbay had most of the night off, rushing for 46 yards on just four carries. Jones had 57 yards rushing on six carries and Rigney had 36 on five. Quarterback Rigney threw just one pass.

Botetourt is now 4-1 and has won four straight after an 11-8 overtime loss to E.C. Glass to open the season. The Cavs have scored 54 or more points in their four wins, scoring 256 points total while allowing just 34 in those games. They’re off this week, returning October 11 to open their Blue Ridge District schedule against Staunton River in Moneta.

“We have some things we need to figure out,” said Harless. “You always have stuff you need to work on.”
