James River was the host for the second of two intra-county volleyball matches on Monday, and, for the second time, Lord Botetourt came out on top. The Cavaliers took a three-set win, 25-18, 28-26, and 25-19.
Emma Rice had 10 kills and four blocks to lead the Cavaliers. Nora Spickard had seven kills, four aces, and nine digs, while Becca Huddleston had six kills, two blocks, and four digs. Skylar Morris had 27 assists, nine digs, and three aces.
Emma Francis led James River in kills with six. Jadyn Miller had five kills, two blocks, and six digs, while Ava Thacker had five kills and eight digs. Konner Myers had nine assists and three aces, and Mary Hoye had 18 digs.
With the win, Lord Botetourt improved to 4-4 overall. Last Thursday in Daleville, the Cavaliers fell to visiting Christiansburg in four sets after jumping to an early lead. LB won the first set, 25-23, but the Blue Demons rallied to win the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-16.
“We struggled in serve-receive and defending the middle against Christiansburg, which made it hard to run our offense the way we would have liked,” said LB coach Julie Conner. “Christiansburg is a good team and played a great match.”
Spickard and Erica Gergely had eight kills each for LB. Morris had 26 assists and 17 digs, while Christina Ellis had three kills and 15 digs, and both had a pair of aces.
River fell at Covington last week in three, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-17. Francis had seven kills, Belle Stewart had 10 assists, and Bella Gilliland had three aces.
“Our two sophomore outsides, Jadyn Miller and Ava Thacker, really stepped it up this week,” said Knights’ coach Davina Copsey.
The Knights are now 3-4 on the season, and their next game is at Floyd next Tuesday, September 27.
On Tuesday, Lord Botetourt was scheduled to open their Blue Ridge District season at home against William Byrd. The Cavs are at Northside Thursday and home to William Fleming next Tuesday, September 27.
“We picked up a win on the road Monday and are looking forward to opening up district play this week,” said Conner.
