DAR members and guests at the annual luncheon

The Botetourt County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met in the Family Life Center of Fincastle United Methodist Church for their annual June luncheon. Family members, prospective members and guests joined the DAR members for this meeting.

Ren “Warrior Wolf” Herdman

The guest speaker for the meeting was DAR Sister Ren “Warrior Wolf” Herdman. She is a descendant of Jesse Brock, a Cherokee Patriot in the Revolutionary War. Her ancestors were members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. Ren brought with her many Native American artifacts that she has collected, with several of them found along the banks of the Roanoke River. A graduate of William Byrd High School, she is a journalist who worked at WSLS-TV before moving to Denver, Colo. In response to the ongoing crisis of missing indigenous women and girls, she teaches Native American women self-defense. As she shared her knowledge of Indian ways, she educated everyone regarding the traditions of the Cherokee Indians and their history and culture.

The Good Citizen winners for 2023 were recognized. Andrew Fowler of James River High School attended with his parents, Amy Alphin and David Fowler. He will be attending Mississippi State University this fall. The Lord Botetourt High School winner is Josie Gore; her parents are Shawna and Marc Gore. She will be attending Virginia Tech this fall. Each winner received a check for $250, sponsored by First Bank.
