At approximately 11 p.m. on Good Friday, April 19, 2019, Jesus called Meredith Proffitt Davis, better known as “Miss Jean” to her family and friends, home to be with Him in heaven. Miss Jean was a devout and ardent believer in her Lord Jesus Christ. She had an unwavering faith in God. Miss Jean was 92 years young and was residing at the Beth Sholom Village in Virginia Beach at the time of her passing.
Miss Jean was raised in Buchanan and was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. She later married Perry Lee Davis Jr. of Buena Vista on December 26, 1951. She was predeceased by him in 1973.
Miss Jean retired with 25 years of distinguished service from the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Md. in August 1982. After her retirement she relocated to Roanoke, where she became actively involved in the Red Hat Society and started her second career at Cracker Barrel.
She was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed preparing and sharing meals and baked goods with her family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed playing bingo. Most of all she loved being with and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was the best wife, mother, and grandmother a family could ever hope to have. She lived out God’s love for others during her time here on earth.
Miss Jean is survived by her daughter, Kathy Bauman, Suffolk; son, Kirkland Davis, East Berlin, Pa.; four grandchildren, Clinton (Valerie) Bauman, Toronto, Canada; Brad (Joy) Davis, Taneytown, Md.; Crystal (Dustin) Dillon, Suffolk; and Ryan Davis, Rockville, Md. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Anna Zayn, Bennett Leo, Emberlynn Elora, and Edith Jean Bauman; Braydon Conley, Brooks Kirkland, and Braxton Keith Davis; and Jackson Linton and Madeline Rose Dillon. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren beyond what words could adequately describe.
She also leaves behind four special cousins, Kenneth Proffitt, Blue Ridge; Barbara Hill, Buchanan; Bernard Proffitt, New Jersey; and Bonnie Proffitt, Lexington.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan; 254-3000.
