Eagle Rock’s annual Ag Day celebration took place Saturday at the Eagle Rock Library, drawing families, students, and community members for a day packed with agriculture-themed fun, interactive learning, and local flavor. While morning rains threatened to put a damper on the festivities, the skies gradually cleared, and attendance grew steadily throughout the day as neighbors turned out to celebrate.
“We appreciate all of the outreach presenters and community partners that helped the library offer this event to our community,” Eagle Rock Library Branch Manager Jennifer Hannah said when asked about last weekend’s event. “We enjoy recognizing and celebrating the importance of agriculture in Botetourt County.”
Visitors were greeted by friendly faces— both human and animal— as Jeffry’s Funny Farm delighted attendees with a variety of live animals to pet and observe. Hands-on displays from 4-H, the Ag Extension Office, and Douthat State Park gave guests of all ages the chance to dig into the science and history of agriculture in Virginia. Ranger Hannah Johnson from Douthat State Park led an engaging watershed demonstration, while Tyler Painter hosted a 4-H/Extension display to share valuable information with families.

STEM enthusiasts had the opportunity to engage in a creative activity led by Beth Leffel of the Eagle Rock Ruritans, who hosted a seed germination station sponsored by the Ruritans. Meanwhile, students from JRHS FFA led a hands-on butter-making station and birdhouse workshop, where participants used pre-assembled kits to build their own take-home creations.
Special presentations throughout the day added an educational twist to the fun. Julie Baker shared her knowledge of beekeeping and the importance of pollinator gardens, and Tim Miller from the Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District introduced families to composting and soil health practices. These engaging sessions offered something for every age and sparked great conversations around sustainability and conservation.
A variety of equipment displays captured the attention of curious attendees. Plows were showcased by Travis Woodson, while Orchard View Farm’s Travis and Emily Bryant brought out a corn silage chopper and truck for guests to explore. VDOT and the local Eagle Rock Fire Department also brought out their vehicles, offering a fascinating look at the machinery that supports both farming and emergency services in the area.

The community came together not just to learn, but also to eat and play. Crafts for kids were provided by the library, and the Eagle Rock Elementary School PTA sold boxed lunches and baked goods. The Eagle Rock Ruritans kept spirits high with a lively game of Cow Chip Bingo— adding a touch of humor to the day’s events and helping raise funds for local causes.
Although Ag Day coincided with the Fincastle Festival, many attendees made a point to enjoy both events, appreciating the chance to connect with local agriculture and small-town charm in one memorable weekend.
With its mix of education, entertainment, and community spirit, Ag Day once again proved to be a highlight of the season in Eagle Rock. Even with a rainy start, the smiles and laughter throughout the day made it clear that the event was a success.
