Early in the school year, the local Eastern Star chapter, Botetourt No. 135, paid a visit to Breckinridge Elementary School in Fincastle. They came “armed” with pencils, pens, markers, notebooks, scissors and other school supplies for students needing those implements at the start of the school year. A popular inclusion was treats and snacks for the teachers.
They were met by Breckinridge Principal Wyatt Turner, who expressed appreciation on behalf of the student beneficiaries, shown with Eastern Star Worthy Matron Trish Morris, a tutor and volunteer for BCPS; and past Matrons Marsha Campbell, a former teacher at Breckinridge, Trina Yancey, and Rebecca Donahew.
Thanks go to several Eastern Star members who helped gather and deliver the supplies.
The Order of the Eastern Star, dating back to the mid 1800s, is the largest fraternal and service organization in the world to which both women and men can belong. The local chapter meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the Catawba Masonic Lodge. Botetourt Eastern Star has also for many years given the “Hunter and Viola Painter Memorial Scholarship” to a county graduating senior. Inquiries are welcomed.
