Attic auditions for ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ May 21, 22
Auditions for “Kiss Me, Kate” will be held on Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m., and Monday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the D. Geraldine Lawson Performing Arts Center (Attic Productions, 7490 Roanoke Road, Fincastle).
This is a play within a play – a traveling company arrives to perform its musical version of “The Taming of the Shrew.” Some roles are doubled: Lilli Vanessi plays Katherine in the play within the play, Fred Graham plays Petruchio, etc. Backstage relationships and problems spill over onto the stage, bringing a halt to “The Taming of the Shrew”when Lilli Vanessi walks out. All is well in the end, and as Fred and Lilli re-unite and Petruchio gets that kiss from his Kate.
Call director Katerina Yancey with any questions: 540-529-1135 (leave a message during the hours of 8:30-5:30.) If there is a question about the music, then Katerina can contact the musical director Richard Whitley.
Adult male and female principle roles and ensemble roles are available; come and prepared with a song, for cold readings from the script and for movement. Dance company roles are available. Dance styles in this show include jazz, tap, the usual Broadway musical dance, and a Pavane, which is a renaissance processional dance.

Kids Fishing Day at Cave Mountain Lake rescheduled for May 20
The US Forest Service rescheduled Cave Mountain Lake’s annual Kids Fishing Day for Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. due to heavy rain and high water over the weekend. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 6.
The lake will be stocked with trout in advance and then open to children ages 3 to 15. Kids Fishing Day is an opportunity for parents to introduce their children to fishing and to the many outdoor recreation opportunities on the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
Fishing is free at the event, however state game laws for the Youth Fisheries Program do apply. Kids are allowed to catch and keep three trout, a minimum of seven inches or longer, and should bring their own poles and any fishing supplies necessary for catching fish.
A reminder to parents that only one pole per person is allowed. A parent or adult guardian must accompany all children. Bring a picnic lunch and spend the day.
Cave Mountain Lake is currently being managed as a Youth Only Fisheries program by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries until June 15. Persons over the age of 15 years old may not fish in the lake until after June 15.
For more information, contact the Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Districts at (540) 291-2188. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
