The Lord Botetourt girls basketball team is competing in the Class 3, Region D tournament this week. Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Thursday and Friday at Magna Vista High School.
Botetourt opened the tournament Tuesday with a home game against Cave Spring. The Cavaliers are the third seed in the tournament while the Knights came in at number six. Results were too late for publication, but if LB won the girls would take on the winner of a game between Christiansburg and Alleghany on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Magna Vista. The other bracket had Patrick County, Hidden Valley, Abingdon and Magna Vista.
The championship game is Friday night at Magna Vista at 7 p.m. If two Roanoke Valley schools are involved it could be moved to a location in this area. The two finalists both make the state tournament, and the region winner will get a home game in the quarterfinal round.
Botetourt came into the tournament with a 19-5 overall record. The Cavaliers lost to William Fleming in the Blue Ridge District tournament championship game, played at LB, last week. The Cavaliers had the lead in the fourth quarter but the Colonels finished strong for a 55-46 win. It was third time the two played this year after splitting the first two.
“It was another tight game with Fleming,” said LB coach Chuck Pound. “Several uncharacteristic, untimely turnovers late in the fourth quarter put Fleming ahead. William Fleming played a more deliberate pace the entire game over what they had done the previous two games. It was a great crowd and great atmosphere.”
Miette Veldman, who would be named the Blue Ridge District Player of the Year after the tournament, led the Cavs with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Brooklyn Shelton had nine points, Scottie Cook had 11 rebounds and Jenna Alam handed out seven assists.
Shelton and Alam were also named to the BRD first team all-district. Champ Hubbard of Fleming is the Coach of the Year.
